Right-of-Way:
A Guide To Abandoned Railroads
Perhaps John Kennedy's greatest legacy to the American people was the
impetus he gave to the idea that started our country's obsession with
physical fitness. Remember President Kennedy's 50-mile hike? In New York
state, where the author lived, it was difficult to attain 50 miles a day
on an established hiking trail. Hence the idea of using the abandoned
railroad rights-of-way as recreational trails was born. Now it is
possible to hike completely across several states entirely on abandoned
railroad beds.
As America's need for recreational space increases, available space is
decreasing. As a result, the concept of linear space has come into being.
An abandoned railroad right-of-way is a perfect example of linear space
which can be utilized for recreational purposes by a great number of
people in a variety of ways. Come explore this newly discovered national
resource.
